Chapter 13

The scene when they pulled up to Shady Oaks Trailer Park wasn’t quite the mess that Ruby had thought it would be. The parking lot was full of course but that didn’t mean much considering its small size. She’d expected the road to be blocked off or at the very least for there to be police tape up at the edge of the trailer park but Nate bypassed the visitor lot and was able to drive all the way down to where the police cruisers were lined up.

Ruby chewed her bottom lip as she took in the differences from when they’d been here just two nights ago.

In the bright light of morning the old shipping containers looked dangerously and haphazardly stacked. They may as well have been a junk pile for all they looked like the seat of power for Tempest’s largest and most dominant gang. All in all it looked a little sad, and it made her heart ache to think of what would become of it now, without Ryker’s unique brand of leadership.

She pulled the door handle and stepped out of the expensive car, wanting to get this over with. She heard Nate say something behind her but amid the buzz of activity this close to the crime scene she couldn’t make out what it was and she didn’t stop to wait on him to reiterate. She moved through the small crowd that had gathered around the police vehicles, only a little bit reassured that they’d actually put up police tape down here to keep people out since there didn’t seem to be anyone to enforce it.

Ruby grabbed the tape with one hand, intending to stretch it up and slide underneath but a deep voice stopped her in her tracks.

“Can you read? Police line. Do. Not. Cross.”

“Holt.” She narrowed her eyes as he moved out of a group of people, one of whom had a microphone, to put himself between her and the train cars behind him. “I should’ve known you’d be on boundary duty.”

“That’s Deputy Holt to you.” He frowned, his gaze darting over her shoulder just before she felt Nate’s presence as he caught up to her. “I’m on duty so show the badge some respect and stay on that side of the police tape.”

“You know I can’t do that.”

“What I know is that you’re a civilian and this is a crime scene.” Holt crossed his arms over his chest. “I also know that you two were here the other night.”

“So were you.” Ruby scoffed.

“I was on duty, just like I am now. You, on the other hand, were here to poke your nose where it doesn’t belong and now you’re back to do it again. Maybe you poked at something and it got Ryker killed, or maybe you came back and did it yourself and you’re here now to make sure we don’t find anything that leads to you. I don't know, but either way, you’re not getting into this crime scene.”

Ruby winced at the accusation in Holt’s voice.
